Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve In Mira Mesa CA is one of the great outdoor places in San Diego.
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve In Mira Mesa CA is a regional park and nature preserve located within northern City Heights and Mira Mesa, San Diego, California. The canyon was designated as a nature reserve by the city in 1973.
It is owned and managed by the city of San Diego and has been designated as both a state and a federal wildlife refuge. The canyon features five miles (8 km) of trails that wind through oak groves and dense chaparral shrublands on the floor of an unusually forested valley nestled between two major north-south running ridges: Penasquitos Ridge to the east, which defines the eastern edge of this corner of the city, and Mira Mesa to the west. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve can be seen clearly from Penasquitos Lagoon in Black Mountain Ranch Open Space park .
The trails are open sunrise to sunset for walking, hiking, cycling, mountain biking and picnicking without requiring reservations or permits. Horseback riding is permitted on weekdays only. During peak hours one must share the trails with bicycles because there are no provisions for bicycle parking at either of the two trailheads located just off Camino Del Sur.
